Little Girls and Their Dolls

I have had people say to me…Little girls just don’t play with dolls any more. My response… Have you encouraged her, or played with her?

I know growing up, that dolls played a very important part of my life. Our family struggled to make ends meet, and our toys were treasured and few. So treasured in fact, that the dolls I owned as a child, are still my treasured possessions today. I rescued them from the toy box after my two younger sisters had also had their turn with them!

My dolls were babies when we played pioneers, with a wagon and trunk. They were my patient clothing models, when I began to learn the art of sewing, and they put up with countless terribly designed and sewn outfits. They were my comfort on cold winter nights.

My sisters and I played with and treasured our dolls much longer than most young girls seem to today.

Paper dolls were another huge part of our creative childhood. A few magazines of the era such as McCalls came out with a sheet of paper dolls each month. We had a neighbour who subscribed to McCalls and saved the paper doll sheets for us. Betsy McCall and her friends were greatly anticipated on a monthly basis! Carefully cut out, the dolls glued to the back of cereal boxes and cut out, they made fantastic play things. Looking at the elaborate craft sets that are presented to today’s children, it is hard for me to imagine that they really stimulate creativity any more than our own imaginations did.

Doll houses played another large part in developing our creativity. As we could only dream of owning a store bought doll house, or furniture, we industriously set out time and again to create our own doll houses out of whatever materials came to hand. A large cardboard box held infinite possibilities.

Items such as empty paper rolls, match boxes, bottle caps, to name a few became pieces of furniture, dishes and much more. Careful searching through the Eatons and Sears catalogue as well as weekly sales flyers also produced a wealth of accessories. Pictures from the food flyers glued to cardboard, were used to fill the kitchen cupboards, people cut out and glued to cardboard became the doll house families. My sisters and I enjoyed countless hours of creative fun with these simple materials.

I read an article recently that suggested little girls are tiring of dolls as young as 6 years old. What do they play with then, that can develop their imagination, creativity and nurturing instincts.

I hope parents everywhere will realize the value in simple, uncomplicated playthings for their children. A doll house, with a doll family, furniture, and accessories can provide countless hours of decorating and imaginative fun, as rooms are changed and rearranged. Not only is the imagination developed, but also fine motor skills are honed as children learn to manipulate miniature items.

I also cannot help but feel that a little girl who cares for, changes, puts to bed and adores a favourite doll, will learn valuable nurturing instincts that will stay with her into her adult life.

Online Shopping for Doll House Enthusiasts

Buying a doll house can be an exciting thing, not just for you as the buyer, but for the person for whom you buy it. A doll house can be a great gift to give: it can encourage imagination in young children, and it can help them have fun together if they have to work together as a group. A doll house can also be fun to buy for you, since you need to update your doll house with a lot of furniture and individual dolls. This can be exciting if you like looking at furniture and mixing and matching pieces; it can also be challenging if you have to piece everything from scratch!

Thanks to the Internet revolution, you can now buy doll houses online! There are inherent disadvantages to doing so, however. You may need to buy things separately because not all doll houses will come with their own furniture. You could end up with a hodgepodge of furniture pieces if you are not careful, and your doll house could end up looking like a trash heap rather than a little home. This means that you need to go through your search and selection slowly: look at all possibly furniture, weight your options in terms of price, and make sure that you get furniture that will last a long while. You need to mix and match furniture, so if you are not well skilled in getting furniture together to look coordinated, don’t be afraid to ask for help!

When buying online, look for doll houses that might also be available in your immediate area. You want to check on what the doll house looks like before you make your online purchase. After all, you will not be able to see the doll house until it arrives at your door, and by then, you might not be given the chance to return it! You need to make sure that your doll house is of the highest quality and that it will last a long time. Make sure to ask if there is any place that you can go to so that you can check the doll house quality. Ask about warranties, or if they can send swatches of the fabrics or materials used.

Having a doll house can be an exciting thing, especially if you have to do a lot of things yourself. Make sure that you get the best furniture that matches with the house. Make sure that you actually get a good doll house. You want your doll house to last a long time and to be enjoyed by generations to come.

Buying a doll house furniture can be fun if you’re into it. You need to look at individual pieces of furniture and you need to know about the quality of the house itself.

Dolls House Furniture: A 7 Piece Bathroom For Beth’s Doll House

A dolls house isn’t just a doll house – it’s a whole new world for the lucky little girls who get their own special little home. I got one when I was a sixties youngster and now that my granddaughter is old enough for her own dolls house I am back viewing that special little world.

It’s just the same – furniture built to scale that is really too big on the scale. I’ve never seen one that can fit all of the dolls house furniture into the room that it’s supposed to reside comfortably. I guess that’s part of the charm of a doll house.

It took quite an enjoyable while to choose but we bought a gorgeous wood and porcelain 7 piece bathroom set last week with Beth’s birthday money.  Bath, shower cubicle, toilet, set of drawers, towel rail, mirror and basin, they looked really good even though they were in Beth’s favourite colour pink. As the bathroom walls are green Beth has decided that we need to redecorate soon.

We got home from town and got down to the serious business of furnishing the bathroom and no matter what we did we couldn’t fit all of the furniture in. After several unsuccessful attempts we decided to put the shower cubicle in the main bedroom. Beth wasn’t happy with that, she said that the bed would get wet and daddy doll wouldn’t be able to get out of bed on his own side.

She hadn’t noticed that daddy doll was too big for the bed and I wasn’t about to break that bubble!

I suggested that we leave the bath out, have a modern bathroom with only a shower. Beth said that we couldn’t do that because there would be nowhere for the children dolls to play with their boats and ducks. I saw her point if the dolls house and it’s dolls were part of the real world but you can’t help but humour 6 year old girls.

The next idea that we had was to leave out the drawers. I was surprised that we didn’t think of that in the first place it being the most logical idea. Beth took the drawers out and rearranged the rest of the furniture until she was satisfied with the result. The bathroom looked great, all it needed were the finishing touches of carpet, bathmat and towels and I knew just where I could get those.

I left Beth playing with the set of drawers – she was amazed at the drawers opening just like real world ones, but she was struggling to get anything to fit in the drawers despite trying most of her dolls clothes.

I logged onto my computer and found a website which had printable dolls house accessories. It wasn’t long before I found a pink and grey carpet that I printed onto fabric. Then I printed a pink rug onto fabric and cut it down to make a bathmat. I had a brainwave and printed another pink and grey carpet and using some elastic thread made a pair of matching curtains. I was able to fashion a couple of towels out of the leftover bits of pink rug and they didn’t look too bad.

I went back to where Beth was playing with the dollshouse and found Beth happily chattering away to her dolls as she moved them around their house.

“Oh” I said “Why have you put the drawers back in and the basin in the bath?”

“There wasn’t anywhere to put the towels” Beth replied in that logical way of hers.

I smiled to myself as we added the new soft furnishings. It didn’t matter to six year old Beth that the furniture didn’t fit, she was just happy to have her new dolls house furniture to play with in her own little world.

My Dolls House Furniture

dolls houseWhen you were a little girl did you have a dolls house? I did and I have fond memories of the many hours that I played with it many years later.

The one that I had was white with a red roof and trim, it looked a lot like the house on the left. I loved to decorate the rooms and make tiny curtains for the windows.

There were special outings with my mum to buy hand crafted dolls house furniture for my beautiful little doll house. We would visit a shop in the town where a man made the doll house furniture onsite. It was fascinating watching him and the shop was like a treasure trove for little girls with doll houses.

I became a proper little homemaker, shifting the high quality dolls house furniture around until I was satisfied and then playing happy families with my dolls, repeating the process daily and inventing little stories around my dolls house family.

The time comes when you grow out of your dolls house and all you have left of it is pleasurable memories. Then if you are lucky you have a daughter of your own and you can join in your daughter’s pleasure by buying her dolls house furniture. Now I have a grand daughter and she is almost at the age where she might look after and treasure her dolls house – I know what she will be getting for Christmas and birthdays!
